Every 2 Seconds, Someone in America Needs Blood

IPA and its family of companies showed their support of the American Red Cross (ARC) by participating in our 2nd Annual Blood Drive on Thursday, July 21st. ARC set up a conference room at headquarters and provided a collections staff consisting of nurses, techs, mobile unit assistants and drivers.

In July of 2004, more than 40 employees volunteered to donate during the historically low donation month. This year, we looked to increase our impact for the summer months and obtained even more employees willing to donate.

Nationwide, blood supplies are at their lowest points in July and most of the country falls below a two-day supply. While blood supplies drop throughout the summer months, the need for blood and blood products increase. ARC appealed to all employees to donate blood and was particularly interested in Type O negative blood, since it can be transfused to anyone in cases of emergency.

"On behalf of patients in need of blood products and the American Red Cross, we are grateful for their generosity and support in donating blood," said Lawrence Smith, Donor Recruitment Representative for the American Red Cross. "IPA and its family of companies has helped prolong the lives of patients needing blood products."

The American Red Cross provides nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, collecting more than 6 million units a year from volunteer donors, and 3,000 hospitals across the country through its national network. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. The Red Cross must collect blood donations each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients and children with blood disorders, and the organizations works to accomplish this through its 36 Blood Services regions.
